The Surface Collective returns to Bloom Gallery, Valencia, with What Remains, an exhibition exploring the core of artistic identity and expression within shared limitations. Formed in 2023, the Surface Collective unites three international abstract artists—Joerg Kesin (Germany), Michael Schmeja (Australia), and Greg Bryce (Scotland)—all based in Valencia. Following their previous exhibition, Surface Tension, which exhibited in Cádiz and at Bloom Gallery, What Remains further explores both the intersections and distinctions within each artist’s unique practice.
In this exhibition, Kesin, Schmeja, and Bryce challenge themselves by setting uniform parameters: a five-color palette, a single format, and identical materials, down to specific brands of paint and paper. Each artist worked independently over several months, intentionally avoiding idea exchange to retain individual interpretation within the constraints. The resulting 28 artworks provide a compelling view of individual expression and collective exploration, posing the question: what remains when so many choices are predetermined?
What Remains highlights the common ground of layering, mark-making, and the balance between spontaneity and control in each artist’s work, showcasing the distinct voices of three generations and cultural backgrounds. Visitors are invited to interpret whether the works embody harmony or dissonance, chaos or cohesion, as they experience this fresh perspective on contemporary abstract painting.
The exhibition launches at Bloom Gallery in Valencia and includes artist talks and discussions to deepen the audience’s engagement with the ideas and processes that define the Surface Collective’s work. What Remains promises an insightful journey into the boundaries of abstraction, individual identity, and shared creative goals.
